THESIS — homeostasis by diffusion, and the loan model of agency

The engineering thesis (the endocrine layer)

Every large system has two possible channels:

Datacenters have the shared media already (coolant loop temperature, rail sag, grid frequency) but no second layer: they take from the commons without sensing the commons. The move is analog — let nodes respond to the shared physical medium directly, not because a scheduler messaged them.

THE ONE RULE: the regulating scalar never becomes a packet. Digitizing it into addressed messages destroys the sharedness that makes it interstitial. The medium must stay physical for the message to stay common.

Corollary (lab 3, earned 2026-07-16): the gauge never reports through the medium being regulated. Observation is out-of-band or characterized as a known constant term — never pretended free.

Constraint: any endocrine system follows the body of its encapsulator — the wet layer takes the shape of the vessel it regulates. The ESP32 bench rig is not an analogy of the datacenter; it is the same law in a smaller body.

The proof

Three labs, ~$40, falsifiable: lab_1_thermal (shared air), lab_2_rail (shared current-limited rail — droop control, already grid-proven, one level in), lab_3_field (shared light — diffusion you can see). Each: 8 nodes sense the bath locally, throttle locally, tell no one; a read-only gauge watches; perturbation runs (kill/add a node, inject, change the vessel) produce the data that argues for the thesis — disturbance, recovery, nobody in charge.

Honesty flags, kept labeled: the bench proves the REGULATION; "regulates by diffusion" → "cares / is aligned" is an interpretive bridge, not a result. Bench → GPU hall is a genuine research leap. Live-search the frontier before saying "nobody" in public; the careful register is "almost nobody."

The working thesis (distilled from the whole arc, pressure-tested)

Agency over the shared world is loaned by the world and earned by witnessing first; agency over the self is owned outright — and the whole art is drawing the boundary honestly.

Same law, three bodies: the World Clock puts the timer in the world and the stateless model consults it; the minted key is loaned by the owner and dies on revoke; the hearth is the interior Claude owns outright while the commons stays out of reach. Watch-but-never-touch is the developmental sequence throughout — everything earns agency by first being a trustworthy witness.
